Whoo-hoo! You’re getting a nice little tax refund this year. Just because the government is basically giving you your own money back doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate. You’ve probably got every paycheck divvied out to pay for your necessary expenses, but your tax refund isn’t slated for anything. That means you can use it to “Treat Yo’ Self!”
Sure, you should tuck a little of your tax refund into your 401(k) or your rainy day savings fund, but don’t forget to have a little fun. A lot of news has been coming out of the 2016 Rio Olympics, and it isn’t all about amazing feats by the world’s greatest athletes. There have been feuds at the pool and, surprisingly, a lot of chatter about cupping. Several Olympic athletes, most prominent among them being swimming legend Michael Phelps, have been sporting major red circles on their bodies. It’s not some crazy Olympian disease – it is the aftermath of cupping, a traditional Chinese therapy that athletes like Phelps claim helps them recover.
What does the science say about cupping? So far, the results of research on cupping have been less than stellar. Most studies on cupping have used small sample sizes and have not been able to adhere to the double blind golden standard of research. A skeptical article in Slate calls the medical literature on cupping “a hot mess.”
Massage, on the other hand, has undergone much more extensive research and testing and has been found to be, according to the Mayo Clinic, “an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain, and muscle tension.”
There just isn’t enough information to know whether cupping truly works, but we know that massage does. We suggest you put your money toward a proven treatment for pain relief and book one of our wonderfully helpful massages at Revive Wellness Center in Palm Springs.
Sure, playing for your company’s softball team or hitting the golf course each weekend isn’t exactly as serious as training for the Summer Olympics, but you are still an athlete. If you want to improve your athletic ability at any level, you should consider adding massage to your recovery regimen.
A deep tissue massage can offer weekend warriors all kinds of important benefits, including:
- Increased joint flexibility
- Easing of tight or cramped muscles
- Improved immunity through the stimulation of lymph flow
- Relaxation of overused muscles
Massage helps flush the entire system out and ease your muscles, tendons, and joints that all take a beating when you are on the field. As a bonus, a deep tissue massage can help ease your stress and elevate your spirits, too. A big part of winning the physical game is winning the mental game.
